Yes. Unfortunately it has to be done on the client end. So you could do it through a GPO or something like that. The registry location is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Portal

The DWORD you want to create is LinkPublishingDisabled with a value of 1 (1 = true, 0 = false).

The frequency can also be adjusted by creating a DWORD of LinkPublishingFrequency and value can be some integer. Microsoft said the frequency is in minutes (not seconds) - however when I original was testing this it appeared to be seconds. So who knows.

I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your investigation, Paul!

I'm just wondering is there any way to temporarily disable propagation of "My Sharepoint Sites" folder for MS Office...

Sherman Woo,

No -- this is unrelated. Your problem sounds more like a Trusted Sites / Local Intranet issue or similar issue.

I would refer to another post I made about this issue: http://paulliebrand.com/2008/04/02/sharepoint-consistently-prompting-for-user-credentials/

Hi Paul,

Can you clarify the scenario about "the specific issues around the pop up box appearing randomly as users are working within Office 2007"?

My scenario is quite simple: "standard" permissions (Members group), standard document library, Office 2003 though. User clicks on .doc file, Word opens but prompts for auth (NTLM on intranet). This is NOT SP1. Any thoughts whether our problem might be related to your scenario(s)?

Thanks!

I'm very interested to find out the solution to this. My customer has been periodically seeing these prompts as well. I'm going to check the Membership group for the sites as you stated to see if that is a problem for them too.

Thanks for posting this.
